Miley Cyrus vs Taylor Momsen – why do we give Miley such a hard time?

Teen Vogue Fashion's Night Out Fashion ShowWhy is it we praise Taylor Momsen for her fashion sense, but blast Miley Cyrus for her raunchy outfits? 17-year-old Miley is constantly in the press for her choice of clothing, which is supposedly inappropriate for a girl of her age.

16-year-old Taylor is also well known for her choice of clothing, however Taylor is making a name for herself in the fashion world as a result – despite being a year younger than Miley.

So why is it that we praise Taylor and blast Miley?

Things could have worked out so differently for the pair. Did you know that Taylor actually auditioned for the role of Hannah Montana? She made it into the final three, however the job was given to Miley, and it is the role of Hannah Montana that Miley is best known. Taylor went on to bag the role of Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl.

Miley has always been pitched to us as this clean cut Disney star, despite years of controversy – everything from leaked photos to lap dancing men old enough to be her dad, so maybe that’s why she gets so much stick. Being a role model goes hand in hand with being a Disney star and Miley is worshipped by young girls world wide.

Things are a little different for Taylor. She is a self proclaimed badU.S singer Miley Cyrus performs at the Rock in Rio Music Festival in Lisbon girl, and is currently having a crack at being a rock star with her band The Pretty Reckless. She doesn’t have to worry about being anyone’s role model, and that’s just the way she likes it.

Hannah Montana is about a young pop star who performs in a disguise so that offstage she can be herself and ‘get the best of both worlds’, maybe if Miley had been able to do that we wouldn’t expect her to be so perfect.

Speaking about the role, Taylor said: “Honestly, if I’d have ended up as Hannah Montana, I don’t know if the show would have gone as well. I probably would have told them all to go f**k themselves by the time I hit 11. And I don’t know how that would have gone down. It’s great for Miley, but I really like where I am right now and I feel really fortunate to be able to really be myself.”

Taylor does receive some criticism for her fashion choices, but not half as much as Miley does. Maybe we’ve given up on Taylor because she ‘doesn’t give a f**k’? Whereas Miley still tries to maintain her Disney good-girl image.

Taylor said: “To be honest, I don’t f**king care. I didn’t get into this to be a role model. So I’m sorry if I’m influencing your kids in a way that you don’t like, but I can’t be responsible for their actions. I don’t care.”

So should we be harder on Taylor or go easier on Miley? What do you think?
