Fringe renewed for a fifth and final season

What could make Friday sweeter? How about the news that Fringe will be back for a shortened final season? (Warning: Video contains spoilers)

The news broke around midnight last night that Fox would be rewarding loyal fans with an ending to J.J. Abrams’ sci fi series.

“FRINGE is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television’s most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve,” said very generous Entertainment President of Fox, Kevin Reilly “The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world.” He added “Although the end is bittersweet, it’s going to be a very exciting final chapter.”

Fringe fans breathed a collective sigh of relief when it was revealed that the show would continue. A question mark has been over Fringe’s fate since the beginning due to poor ratings and an eventual move to the Friday night death slot, and it is incredible that we have come so far. In fact, the chance of a renewal was so slim that two endings were filmed for upcoming two-parter season finale, ‘Brave New World’, one to wrap up the season, one to wrap up the series.

The 13 episode fifth season will bring the episode total to an impressive 100. The show is expected to take a new direction, following the story glimpsed in the nineteenth episode of Season 4, ‘Letters of Transit’.
