Top 5 Reality TV Success Stories

Everyone has an opinion on reality TV – whether it’s fly-on-the-wall shows like Big Brother or talent shows like X Factor – it seems people either love them or hate them.

But even if you don’t like watching them, do you still think they can be a great way to find talented individuals who might not have “made it” otherwise?

Post-punk laptop rapper MC Lars recently shared his opinion on shows like X Factor and American Idol. He told us, “There is some talent but none of those artists are going to change the world singing covers.”

So from Adam Lambert from American Idol, to Brian Dowling from Big Brother, check out these five reality stars who have enjoyed huge success.

Don’t forget to leave us a comment and let us know if you think truly talented people can come from reality/TV talent shows.

What about Cheryl Cole? Arguably more successful than all on you list.

I rarely watch Reality TV. I first watched AI from start to finish in Season 8 because of Adam Lambert. He was so different from any contestant I’d seen since S1. Adam is by far the most talented singer ever to be discovered on that show. He paid his dues unlike most of the contestants on AI. He has been singing since age 10 and after HS was cast in many musicals including HAIR, GREASE, and TEN COMMANDMENTS. Don’t think any contestant on AI worked that hard to get where he is now. I tried to watch The Voice last season but was disappointed with how much focus was on the judges not the contestants. There also seemed to be resentment by the judges toward AI or anyone that came from that show. My opinion is that The Voice feels intimidated by AI and it’s many years of success. Personally, I haven’t watched AI except for an occasional “tune in” to watch Adam Lambert when he appeared as a mentor or performer. I’m not sure if the new X-Factor will be successful. I will tune in to watch Paula and Simon and to give the show a chance.  As far as the rest of the reality shows I won’t be watching.

I don’t like Rap and I don’t know who MC Lars is, but he’s right about singing covers.
Adam doesn’t sing covers anymore, he got into American Idol to get the opportunity to get past singing what other people wanted him to sing. He’s writing more of his own songs on his new Album and is a ground breaking artist.I do like Joe McElderrys new improved voice after pop star to opera star, but his Album is still full of covers which is a real shame. He’s too young to consign himself to a nostalgia audience even if that pays well, I hope he gets original songs next time.

Note that for Adams graph they had to double the scale on the left hand side to accommodate the AMA 2009 spike, and his results are spread worldwide whereas Cheryls graph is mainly UK and Ireland results, and her biggest spikes are connected with Ashley. Also Cheryl has been a celebrity for longer than Adam.

We have become much too insular here in the UK, Most people here think that just because someone is successful here they are everywhere. Or that if they are not successful here they are not relevant. That just isn’t so.

adam is one of  the most incredible talent to come out of idol since the beginning.  we can’t forget jennifer hudson and carrie underwood either.  but truly, adam really is in a class by himself.  he’s the total package and twenty years from now he’ll still be rocking away.  and thasnks, adam, for your good wishes to those of us who had a little visit from hurricane irene.
