Celebrity Break-ups: The good, the bad and the ugly

Dougie Poynter - Jolly Day Out

The population of Splitsville grows everyday, and more and more celebrities are taking up residence there, dragging their emotional baggage down the street for everyone to see.

Whether celebs are happily living their lives in the public eye or trying their hardest to keep their private life private, when it comes to their relationships there is often nothing they can do to avoid the whole world knowing their business.

Some handle it quite well – take sexy singer Adam Lambert and Sauli Koskinen. The pair recently called time on their relationship, but both have handled it in such a classy way. No slagging each other off, no posting bitchy tweets, instead Adam has stressed how the split was mutual and how they plan to remain good friends, and just in case anyone doubted their story, Adam even tweeted a cute photo of him and his ex playfully strangling each other with the caption, “We’ll show you Turbulent!”

Take note, celebrities. That’s how you do it.

Then we have couples like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, two so secretive about their relationship that we only truly had it confirmed when it ended.
Covering both the bad and ugly category, Kristen was caught cheating on poor Rob. She was photographed, in broad daylight, in public, with married film director Rupert Sanders – short of drowning a sack of kittens while they were at it, the situation can’t get much worse. Kristen did the last thing anyone would have expected her to do… she spoke publicly. She did the right thing, confessing and publicly apologising, and it might have done her some good because rumour has it the pair are back together again, not that we’ll ever know unless it all goes wrong again.

Another bad and ugly break-up has to be when Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston split. The pair seemed to be the perfect couple with the perfect marriage until Brad filmed Mr & Mrs Smith with now-girlfriend Angelina Jolie. Then the ugly started, with the pair blaming each other, and some even blaming Angelina. T-shirts were made, for crying out loud! You were Team Aniston or Team Jolie, and you wore your stance on their split right across your chest.

Hollywood big-names don’t seem to have much luck with love, and it seems the worst thing that can happen is to have your significant other cast alongside someone sexy enough to turn their head. Take Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe. They split after a very public argument, but then the reason came out: apparently Reese had found photos of her hubby with his Stop Loss co-star Abbie Cornish, and when she confronted him he admitted to cheating and said he wanted to call it a day. Reese later described her divorce as “very humiliating” but the pair have remained friends for the sake of their kids.

Cheating always seems to bring about the end of a relationship… sooner or later. Look at Sienna Miller and Jude Law, when it came to light he had cheated on her with the nanny she stuck by him for four months before calling it quits.

Many have done it right like Adam and Sauli though. Couples who have split and remain friends, even for the sake of their kids, include Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz and David Arquette and Courtney Cox.

Some break-ups can cause problems for just one party, like poor Dougie Poynter. After splitting from Frankie Sandford, the McFly bassist turned to drink and drugs, and even attempted suicide. Luckily Dougie sought help, and is doing really well now.

Whether the break-ups are good, bad or ugly, it’s always nice to see those involved move on and be happy.
