Steve Rushton Interview

Premiere Of Walt Disney Pictures' "Race To Witch Mountain" - Arrivals
"As long as you all believe in us, that’s all that matters"

After two number one singles and an album, it seemed like Son Of Dork had disappeared into oblivion. Then, on the 11th July 2007 their little world was turned upside down with the shocking and confusing departure of David Williams.
Our Q&A with The Rushtonaiter in the aftermath revealed his thoughts, his plans and a load of crap you didn’t need to know – but we’re sure you’ll enjoy reading.

Now you’re writing your own separate material, would you ever consider doing gigs without the rest of Son Of Dork?
Not while I‘m in SOD. At the moment I’m only interested in SOD, but I’ll still carry on writing songs so I started my new music Myspace -www.myspace.com/steverushton to share some of the songs I have written over the years. I don’t want to perform with anyone else at this moment in my life.

Will Son of Dork continue with four members or will you guys be looking for a guitarist to replace Dave?
We are going carry on as a four piece, another guitarist isn’t needed. Any musician will know that three guitars is too many and Chris is talented enough to play two guitar parts at once any ways (Shiny God).

How did you feel when you found out that Dave had left SOD to be with his new band and had done what he did with the SOD MySpace profile?
I was gutted about the MySpace, he didn’t leave he just said the band split which was wrong of him. It was a low blow, bad darts, but I know SOD can carry on without him. As long as you all believe in us, that’s all that matters.

So are you still friends with Dave after what’s happened?
No I’m not.

How do you think Dave leaving will change SOD as a band, the fan base and the music?
The music will be better, less swearing and we’ll be tighter as a unit which is better for us.

Why do you always seem to have an excuse to get your arse out at every occasion no matter what it is?
What can I say? I am a naturist and I’m very proud of my hobbit like features and I wish to share them. Check YouTube for more [laughs].

Do you get stalked by weird people?

Not now, but I was few times in the past.

Are you offended by the fan site Steve Stinks?
No I love it. Anything that has my name on, whether it’s good or bad, is a compliment to me.

What’s the weirdest present you have ever received from a fan?
A cape saying Rushtonaiter on it, it was great.

What was your favourite toy growing up?
Not a toy fan, my favourite thing was magic sets. Geek [laughs].

Where do you get your inspiration from when writing songs?
I get inspiration from Elvis, Billie Joe and Greenday and other bands. Otherwise it’s from anything I’m listening to, inspiration from films, subjects in my life or even if someone says a phrase that makes you think, then you can write about that.

How long does it take you to write a song?
A song can be written in twenty minutes but sometimes it takes weeks. It depends if it feels right at the time and if you’re vibing or not.

Who do you prefer Bowling For Soup, Army Of Freshmen or Wheatus?

Bowling For Soup – I have been a huge fan since I was a young’en and playing with them on the tour bus (videos on SOD’s profile) was one of my life’s ambitions and felt magical, I’m well chuffed.

How do you feel when people ‘fan girl’ over you?

Great, I love attention [laughs].

Your idol Billie Joe Armstrong plays guitar, so why did you decide to play bass instead?

I didn’t decide to play bass, I learnt guitar first and played that. Then I went to audition for SOD as guitarist and they said “we have a guitarist will you play bass?” So I did. I’m actually a guitarist but I play bass and drums.

What the bloody hell does Buff mean?

Who knows? I was fed up of saying nuff so I went for buff. I guess buff is fit, so fit love.

What possessed you to have your hair cut similar to the guy from AFI?

He copied me [laughs].

Any Wedding Plans?
You having a laugh? No no no.

If you could steal a song from any band what song would it be and why?
That’s a very good question. It changes every day but right now I would go with Go West – King Of Wishful Thinking.

What is your favourite cheese?
My favourite is the good old gouda from Holland, I can’t be doing with blue veined cheese.

What is your favourite kind of soup?
Leek and potato.

And finally, the award for the best question and answer goes to (we‘re not changing the way it‘s written ‘cause that adds to the magic)…
Mi m8 tld me u liked ur eggs scrambled but i google stalked u n it sed u lyk em hard boiled?

I like my eggs all those ways but never like my eggs fertilised [laughs].
