Katy Perry: My parents are glad I’m not a criminal

Katy Perry says her parents are happy for her to act outrageously because they know she won’t turn into a serial killer.

The singer had a strict upbringing and was raised by pastors. Katy began singing in church and shot to fame with her provocative single I Kissed a Girl.

Even though the 25-year-old star often wears skimpy outfits and her songs contain suggestive lyrics, her religious parents are happy with her chosen career path. They never worry she will go off the rails because deep down she is a sensible person.

“My goal was never to be rebellious. I first started singing in church. My parents were strict but not stuffy. We had fun but I wasn’t allowed to watch MTV. When I moved out I just became this living, breathing sponge,” Katy revealed in an interview for the September issue of the British edition of Glamour magazine.

“My parents and I have a lovely relationship probably because they realise I’m not going to turn into a crazy person or a prostitute or Charles Manson.”

Even though Katy is now an adult, she still tests her parents’ patience with her extrovert behaviour and spontaneous decisions. She was happy to appear naked in her music promo for California Gurls and also generated shockwaves when she got engaged to serial womaniser Russell Brand on New Year’s Eve following a whirlwind romance.

“There is a little red button that is constantly pushed with them and sometimes the red has pretty much worn off around it,” Katy joked.

“It was wearing off when I said, ‘Mum, I’m naked in a cotton-candy cloud,’ or ‘I’m marrying Russell Brand.’ They really didn’t know about him. They give people the benefit of the doubt then it’s up to the person to mess it up.”
